What is breast reduction?

A breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the size of the breasts by removing skin, tissue, and fat. This results in breasts that are smaller and firmer. Most women who choose to get breast reduction feel that their breasts are out of proportion with the rest of the body and want to achieve a figure they are happy with. Having large or heavy breasts can result in a number of health issues including:

  • Bad posture
  • Neck pain
  • Pain in the back and shoulders
  • Rashes
  • Bra straps that cut into your shoulders, creating grooves

If you are suffering from any of these issues, a breast reduction may provide you a way to regain your self-confidence and enhance your quality of life.

How it works.

For breast reduction surgery, the following steps will be taken:

  • Incisions are typically made around and below the nipple
  • Dr. Afrooz then reduces the amount of fat and breast tissue to create smaller breasts while retaining an aesthetically pleasing, natural shape
  • This procedure may include relocating the nipple to a more natural position, depending on the change in the size of the breasts

A breast reduction typically takes between one to three hours.

What are the benefits of breast reduction?

Breast reduction can provide patients with relief from neck, back, and shoulder pain as well as from chafing and irritation where the bra straps dig into the skin. Clients find that after breast reduction, they have more energy and stamina and feel more confident and comfortable participating in sports and other physical activities. For some, they are more present for spending time with their young children, who keep them on the go. Additionally, breast reduction can enhance quality of life, providing the patient with a more positive self-image and a wider range of clothing choices.

Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

If you are experiencing pain due to large breasts or are simply unhappy with your breast size, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction. During your consultation with Dr. Afrooz, your full candidacy will be determined and any questions you may have regarding the procedure can be thoroughly addressed.

What can I expect during breast reduction recovery?

As with most breast surgeries, you may experience bruising or soreness for several days after your treatment. We will recommend you get as much rest as possible following your breast reduction procedure and that you keep any physical activity to a minimum. Regular exercise and other activities can be resumed approximately four weeks after treatment, but getting adequate rest in the meantime will ensure a proper and speedy recovery. Dr. Afrooz and his team of caring professionals will be watching over your recovery at every step – we genuinely care about the people we treat.

What is the cost of a breast reduction procedure?

Breast reductions are often covered by insurance, however, patients receiving breast reductions solely as a cosmetic procedure will be responsible for the full cost of treatment. We accept most major credit cards, including financing through CareCredit to provide our patients with flexible payment options.

At Paul N. Afrooz, MD, our top priority is providing patients with exceptional care and beautiful, high-end results. We believe our results are well worth the investment and don’t want the cost of treatment to bar you from our services. With CareCredit, you can pay for your surgical or med spa procedure with affordable monthly payments.

Breast Reduction FAQ

Can I combine other procedures with my breast reduction?

Yes! Breast reduction is often paired with mastopexy (breast lift) to address sagging and downward-facing nipples in addition to excess breast tissue. Many patients choose to undergo breast reduction as part of a comprehensive mommy makeover procedure to contour the entire figure. Lastly, some patients will benefit from undergoing liposuction at the same time as their breast reduction to further sculpt and refine the chest region.

Will I have visible scars?

Dr. Afrooz goes to great lengths to minimize scarring after surgery by placing incisions strategically in areas where they will be the least noticeable. For breast surgery, incisions can be well-hidden within the darker pigments of the areolas or within the inframammary fold where they are obscured by the bra line.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery?

During your consultation, you can discuss with the doctor your plans for future pregnancies. Dr. Afrooz can pursue an incision pattern that preserves nipple sensation and function in order to ensure breastfeeding will be viable in the future. As long as the milk ducts remain attached, women should have no problem breastfeeding down the line.

Are there any risks?

Breast reduction is considered a safe, effective procedure, especially when performed by an experienced, skilled provider such as Dr. Afrooz. However, all surgeries come with inherent risks. These may include infection, bleeding, loss of sensation, poor scarring, and extended swelling. The doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of breast reduction in greater depth during your private consultation.
