In addition to making enormous impacts in the lives of his patients, Dr. Afrooz is committed to plastic surgery education within the plastic surgery community. His expertise in aesthetic surgery, most notably facelift and rhinoplasty, is highly respected both nationally and internationally. Dr. Afrooz has made many contributions to the world of plastic surgery to earn this respect and praise from his peers. Among these contributions are several peer-reviewed publications and articles, mostly published in the premier journal Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
The nose has many unique characteristics that contribute to its overall appearance, one of these being the tip of the nose. In this article, Dr. Afrooz proposes a total of six different techniques that can be used to reposition the nasal tip. These techniques can be used alone or in combination, and this article describes some of the successful approaches that Dr. Afrooz uses in rhinoplasty surgery.

Fractionated fat is a refined fat injection technique that involves breaking harvested fat into smaller bundles of cells. In this study, Dr. Afrooz and his colleagues explain the benefit of using this advanced fat transfer technique to improve the results of lower eyelid surgery. Traditional fat transfer techniques cannot be used in this area because they produce results that may be uneven or lumpy. With fractionated fat, Dr. Afrooz found that it is possible to produce a natural increase in volume that complements the results of a lower blepharoplasty.

Upper blepharoplasty addresses signs of aging in the upper eyelids, which is a common component of facial rejuvenation procedures. In this publication, Dr. Afrooz outlines five steps that help restore tautness, smoothness and youthfulness to the skin surrounding the eyes. This five-step technique also includes the use of fractionated fat to restore volume to the area for optimal cosmetic results.

Patient safety is Dr. Afrooz’s number one priority – a priority that doctors in all branches of medicine should share. This study was performed to determine the safety of outpatient procedures, which took thousands of cases into consideration. Dr. Afrooz concluded that outpatient plastic surgery procedures are quite safe when performed in accredited facilities, but some patients may be considered “high risk” and will benefit from enhanced postoperative monitoring. This includes patients with a high BMI, patients whose surgeries will last more than four hours, and those undergoing a combination of procedures.

This publication details an advanced rhinoplasty grafting technique called the butterfly graft. Grafting is an effective technique for creating an aesthetic nasal contour. In this article, Dr. Afrooz describes the butterfly graft, which spans from the tip of the nose to the soft tissue triangle of the nostrils. This technique is a reliable method of balancing the appearance of the nasal tip and nostrils.

The dorsum is also referred to as the “bridge” of the nose. This part of the nose is frequently addressed during rhinoplasty procedures to produce a more desirable shape. Producing this shape requires the careful adjustment of six distinct nasal structures. Dr. Afrooz highlights his techniques for correcting the width and shape of the dorsum for consistent and gratifying results, in order to avoid deformities and enjoy long-lasting results.

The columella is a piece of tissue that separates the nostrils, which covers the nasal septum. A hanging columella is a condition in which the columella droops lower than either side of the nose. In this article, Dr. Afrooz outlines a number of techniques to properly treat this common cosmetic concern. There are six anatomic components of the nose that can contribute to a hanging columella. Dr. Afrooz provides methods to diagnose and treat these components to achieve the desired results.

Gluteal fat transplantation is a popular procedure for augmenting the buttocks, but there have been a number of reports that associate the procedure with serious side effects. Dr. Afrooz reviewed the safety aspects of this procedure to determine the essential components of delivering safe gluteal augmentation. These components include proper technique, the position of the patient during treatment, choosing eligible patients, and having a thorough knowledge of the anatomy. With these factors identified, Dr. Afrooz has determined the precautions that must be taken to ensure a safe and successful procedure.
