What Is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation with Dr. Afrooz centers on the precise placement of a custom silicone chin implant, selected and sized to complement your unique facial structure. Depending on your anatomy and goals, the implant can enhance the chin alone or extend definition along the jawline — and for the right candidate, it can be combined with rhinoplasty to create a more comprehensive transformation of the facial profile. As with every aspect of his surgical planning, Dr. Afrooz will assess your features in full to determine the approach that best brings your face into balance.

Your Custom Chin Augmentation – What Does It Entail?

Planning your chin augmentation requires an eye for facial balance and harmony. Dr. Afrooz will discuss whether you're a candidate for an intraoral (inside the mouth) approach to placing your chin implant. Dr. Afrooz also provides sample chin implants that you can see, touch, and discuss in person during your pre-operative consultation. His other approach entails a small, nearly imperceptible incision under the chin through which the implant is placed. These implants are crafted from a medical silicone that the body accepts. The implant can add volume just to the chin itself, or to both the chin and along the jawline. The incisions are placed within the mouth or hidden beneath the chin, after which the implant is put in place. The surgery takes about one hour to complete and requires only intravenous sedation and local anesthesia.

6-Week Follow Up

What Is the Recovery Time?

When your chin augmentation is complete, the recovery time is typically 1-2 weeks, first feeling slightly tight, swollen, or bruised, but, it later subsides. However, you can return home to rest and recover. When the incision is within the mouth, you will have dietary restrictions while the incision heals, eating only soft foods and avoiding any food that is very hot, spicy, or chewy.

You will rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash on a specific schedule to speed healing and avoid any complications. When placed beneath your chin, a special ointment will be applied so the incision heals nicely and quickly. Any swelling or bruising fades quickly, with most patients able to return to work or other activities within three days to a week.

Combination Procedures Chin Augmentation and Rhinoplasty

Many patients choose to undergo rhinoplasty and chin augmentation in a single surgical appointment, to create a more dramatic change in the facial balance, and a beautifully sculpted profile.

Frequently Asked Questions Chin Augmentation

Are chin implants permanent?

Chin implants are designed to be long-lasting and remain in place indefinitely. They do not need to be replaced on any schedule. While some patients choose to have an implant adjusted or removed if their preferences change, the intention of the procedure is to provide a permanent improvement to facial balance.

Can a chin implant be removed if I change my mind?

Yes. If a patient wishes to have an implant removed or exchanged for a different size at a later date, a secondary procedure can accomplish this. The process is straightforward when performed by an experienced surgeon.

What is the difference between chin augmentation with an implant and with filler?

Filler can add temporary volume to the chin and is a good option for patients wanting to preview the effect before committing to surgery. However, filler typically lasts one to two years, cannot create true structural projection in the way an implant can, and may require ongoing maintenance. An implant provides a permanent, structurally sound improvement that integrates naturally with the underlying bone.

What are the risks of chin augmentation?

Potential risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness or altered sensation along the chin and lower lip, infection, and in rare cases, implant shifting. These risks are minimized by precise surgical technique and careful follow-up. Dr. Afrooz reviews all risks in detail at your pre-operative consultation.

Will chin augmentation affect my bite or dental health?

A properly placed chin implant sits over the bone of the chin and does not interfere with the teeth, bite, or dental structures. It does not alter the position of the jaw. Patients with existing dental concerns should discuss their history with Dr. Afrooz during the consultation so any relevant factors can be considered in the surgical plan.

Will chin augmentation change how my lips look?

Enhancing chin projection can subtly change the perceived proportions of the lower face, which sometimes makes the lips appear more balanced and prominent in relation to the chin and nose. This is typically seen as a positive side effect.

Is chin augmentation a good option for men?

Chin augmentation is one of the most commonly requested facial procedures among male patients. A well-projected, defined chin is closely associated with a strong, masculine profile. Dr. Afrooz tailors the implant selection and positioning to suit male facial proportions, ensuring results that look naturally masculine.

Can I have chin augmentation if I have had prior jaw surgery or dental implants?

Prior jaw surgery or dental work does not automatically disqualify a patient from chin augmentation. However, it is important to disclose your complete medical and dental history so Dr. Afrooz can assess the anatomy and determine whether any modifications to the approach are warranted.
