What is a Fat Transfer?
A fat transfer, also called fat grafting, is a cosmetic procedure that is similar to dermal fillers, but it uses fat from the patient’s own body. This involves the fat being harvested from an area of the body with excess fat. Then it is purified and re-injected into the face to increase volume and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. This technique is commonly used on the cheeks and jawline, as well as to treat nasolabial folds. Fat transfers can also help reduce crow’s feet and the appearance of bags under the eyes.
What Can I Expect from a Fat Transfer Procedure?
A fat transfer procedure begins with extracting fat from somewhere on the body via liposuction. This can be an area on the body where excess fat is found, so that the patient also receives a minor improvement in body contour. Afterwards, the fat is purified and re-injected using a very fine needle. These injections are performed with the utmost care and precision by Dr. Afrooz. After the injections, your procedure is complete, with results already visible.
How is Recovery from a Fat Transfer?
After a fat transfer, you may experience mild bruising and swelling where fat was gathered. Patients typically experience mild swelling in the face as well, which can last for a few days. However, after approximately two weeks, results should be fully visible. We recommend taking about a week off from work and avoiding exercise and other physical activity until two weeks after your procedure. This gives the body enough time to properly heal without placing it under unnecessary stress.
