What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job or nose surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that can create a more aesthetically pleasing nose. It can also be used to correct breathing difficulties. Most patients choose to have a rhinoplasty to improve the symmetry of the nose or to correct imperfections on the bridge or tip of the nose. Due to the complexity of the nasal anatomy, technical demands of the procedure, and the artistry that is required, rhinoplasty is known to be one of the most challenging procedures in all of plastic surgery. Dr. Paul N. Afrooz is proud to offer his patients the expertise required to deliver natural, stunning results.
What is Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is a rhinoplasty that is performed after a prior nose surgery. Patients may choose to get a revision rhinoplasty if they are not happy with the results from their prior surgery. This can also correct problems with breathing that persist or arise from prior rhinoplasties. After any rhinoplasty, the nose develops scar tissue, which can make future surgeries more difficult. For this reason, a revision rhinoplasty requires specific expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
What Can I Expect from a Rhinoplasty Procedure?
Rhinoplasties are typically performed using one of two techniques: an open approach or a closed approach. A closed approach can be used for minor corrections, and incisions are made on the inside of the nose. Dr. Afrooz prefers the open approach, which also includes an incision in the columella, the skin that separates the nostrils. This approach gives the surgeon better access to the nose, and allows for more flexible methods of correction. The exact techniques used will depend on the patient’s goals and the current shape of their nose, but can include repositioning the nasal bones or altering the shape of the cartilage. If the patient is having trouble breathing, Dr. Afrooz may adjust the nasal septum or the turbinates within the nasal cavity to improve airflow.
How is the Recovery from Rhinoplasty?
After a rhinoplasty, you can expect a recovery period of one to two weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery. During this time, we recommend that patients get as much rest as possible and minimize any physical activity. Patients don’t typically experience much pain or discomfort following surgery, but adequate rest will ensure proper healing and recovery. You may experience swelling for a number of weeks after treatment, and residual swelling can persist for several months. After approximately one year, residual swelling should be diminished and you can enjoy the full results of your surgery.
